Preparing for School

The beginning of the school year is nearly upon us and I thought it a proper time to pause and reflect upon how we as a community are doing in preparing for this year and beyond.  As the son of two educators – my Father was a principal and my mother a teacher – I realize how much preparation by teachers, administrators and others goes into getting ready for that first day of class.

The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of the Parts

Later this week, the Roanoke City Council will join the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors in what is possibly the first joint meeting between the two elected bodies.  The purpose of the meeting is to enable information sharing about items of regional significance and perhaps lay the groundwork for future joint efforts.

Retreat to Advance

This week the City Council will meet in a retreat to discuss their hopes and aspirations for the future of our city.  This retreat actually represents the first time since the recent elections that all seven members have gathered for official action, offering an excellent opportunity to clarify a unified approach to establishing priorities.
